We have always been a pioneer in safety. In the new XC90 we celebrate the three point seat belt that we made standard in 1959, but for us, it’s no longer enough to protect you in the event of an accident. We want to actively prevent accidents from occurring in the first place. It’s an approach that we call IntelliSafe. It’s what happens when you combine our legendary commitment to safety with our vision for the future. And it’s what makes the all-new Volvo XC90 one of the safest SUVs. Ever.

Rearward facing radars detect if a rear impact is imminent and safety belts are tightened in advance in order to keep the occupant in a good position. Lights also start flashing to warn the driver behind, and the brakes are activated to help reduce the impact on the occupants.
Together with Volvo Cars’ new seat design, which integrates the next generation of the groundbreaking Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), this new holistic rear impact pre-crash function helps reduce whiplash injuries.
Lane Keeping Aid supports you if you’re about to stray outside your lane. First, the system detects if you’re driving proactively – for example, by using the indicator – or not. If you’re not, and you cross a lane marking, the system will gently steer the car back into lane. If the steering intervention is not enough, or if you veer into the other lane, the system will warn you with either steering-wheel vibrations or a warning sound – the choice is yours. You can also turn it off, if you wish.
As you probably know, reversing out of a parking spot can be tricky, especially in a busy parking lot, because your vision can be restricted, making it difficult to see other vehicles, objects or people crossing your intended path. To make it less stressful, we developed Cross Traffic Alert. This state-of-the-art system uses radar units inside each corner of the rear bumper of the XC90 to detect approaching vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at almost 100 feet. If a problem is detected, you’ll hear an audible warning from the left or right rear loudspeaker, as well as a graphic warning on the center screen. It’s all about making your life easier and safer.
Half of all traffic fatalities in the US are road departure accidents. This is a common accident type with different causes, such as driver distraction,
fatigue, or poor weather conditions.
In a run-off road scenario, the new XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts tighten to keep the occupants in position. Even before this happens though, the lane keeping aids try to alert and avoid a run-off event. In addition, To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrainby up to 30%.
The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car.
This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher. The all-new Volvo XC90 detects a potential crash and brakes automatically in order to avoid a collision or mitigate the consequences of a crash.
The Blind Spot Information System informs about vehicles in the blind spots of the XC90. It also alerts the driver to vehicles that are approaching fast from behind.
This combined with a 360 degree view up to 12 mph using 4 hidden cameras on the sides, front and rear of the car and displayed in the center display help eliminate blinds spots in parking lots and on the road.
As proactive as our practical safety technology is, the first step toward creating an extremely safe car is designing maximum strength around the passenger compartment. Here, the XC90 excels with extended use of boron steel, which is one of the strongest types of steel in the world – we believe that protection of those inside the car is the highest priority. Together with the body structure, the safety system is designed to help protect the occupants in a crash. And now, activation of restraints along with other safety systems in the car covers more situations than ever before, including “run off road” scenarios. Seat belt pre-tensioners are also standard for all seating, including the third row. To reduce the risk of injury even further, advanced safety belt load-limiting technology is standard in the front seats. And to ensure maximum comfort, the safety belts in both first and second row are height adjustable.
